Curse of the Golden Flower

Zhang Yimou is back with a historical Drama. This time it's about the Emperial Family or rather the dark side of the Empire.

Sadly the theater, or the movie itself, i visitted projected the subtitles poorly. Nevertheless i do think this is not his best movie. Almost like he had to rush himself.

Though he's still a masterfull storyteller this time there's something not quite right. Wich does not mean i did not enjoy this movie. My admiration for his talents remains untarnished. This is once more a whole new level of cinema he's handing out. More then once i got the impression he wanted to make much more a drama then another Wu-Shu enactment. This movie goes well beyond Martial Arts.

As allways his movies are magical in portraying the true soul of China. But the end-scene of this movie left me with an amputated feeling. As if i had been kicked out of the storyline just before getting hold of what i really wanted to know.

COTGF is not a must see for anyone but an interesting movie nevertheless.
